Looking for a Summer Dance Intensive for Your Son?

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011

It’s that time of year again…time to audition for summer dance intensives. I feel quite removed from the process this year because Julian will be handling it by himself in New York. He’s made his own decisions about which intensives he wants to attend, and he will sign up and audition on his own as well. He will do all of this from New York, since all of the major schools hold their auditions at the School of American Ballet (SAB).

Now, as I write this I’m thinking… “Hmmm. Wonder if there’s a deadline? Wonder if he needs to actually send in a registration form and fee? Maybe we need to do all of this together when he gets home.” Yes, the likelihood is that I will help him at least get registered for the auditions if they are not open auditions–or if SAB doesn’t have some arrangement with these schools.

Julian plans to audition for Pacific Northwest, Boston Ballet, Houston Ballet, and San Francisco Ballet. He is not allowed to attend the SAB summer intensive again now that he is in the school. (I mentioned a bit more about Julian’s choices in this post.) And he no longer has a desire to go back to American Ballet Theatre (ABT).

For those of you who have no idea where to start, who are still looking or who would like some help, last year I put together The Summer Dance Intensive Handbook. I know that choosing the right summer dance program and preparing for it can prove a stressful experience for parents and dancers. So, I took all my experience and the interviews I’ve done that relate to the topic and compiled them all into this handbook ,which offers practical advice for parents and dancers so they make the right choice, prepare appropriately, conduct themselves well, stay healthy, and learn as much as possible while enjoying themselves as well.

You can purchase The Handbook for the Kindle at Amazon.com or as a PDF or for any other ereader at Smashwords.com.

Attending a summer dance intensive was the best thing Julian ever did to advance his dancing and change his attitude about dance. After his first summer at ABT, he became much more serious and motivated. I highly recommend boys attend one. Plus, it may be the first  time they get to be in class with 15-30 other boys their age. That, in and of itself, is worth the experience. The camaraderie and friendly competition between the boys can’t be recreated anywhere else  (except maybe in the year-long programs). It pushes them along much faster than anything else. In fact, I’d attribute Julian’s advancement over the summer to being in the boys’ classes more than anything else.

There are lot’s of great summer dance intensives for boys. I highly recommend those affiliated with ballet companies, if your son is focused on ballet. If not, choose a regional program that offers many styles. I’ve not mentioned it before, but Debbie Allen has a high-quality program we always hoped to have Julian attend down in Los Angeles, and it covers all styles (hip hop, jazz, tap, ballet, contemporary)–and has top notch ballet instructors as well. If your son is into tap, follow the tap festivals around all summer. These can be a great learning experience with some of the top tappers around. Julian used to love going to the San Francisco Tap Festival and we had hoped to make it to the LA Festival but never did.

Dance abounds all summer. Just because your regular dance school may be closed, don’t let that stop your son from dancing. See it as an opportunity to take his dancing to the next level by enrolling him in a summer dance intensive–even if it means taking the leap and letting him go away from home for a few weeks.

Back Home in Time for TDC Intensive and an Award

Friday, August 13th, 2010

We arrived back home in N. CA to freezing weather…well, at least that’s what it feels like after seven and a half weeks of beastly heat. Here in the mountains where we live, it’s about 55 degrees each morning due to the coastal fog. It might hit 78 in Los Gatos during the day, but it only feels that warm at our house in the sun. I’m looking at all that summer clothes I purchased in New York and realizing I may not wear it again until I return to New York again–or we have a heat wave here.

Anyway, Julian had two days off–a travel day on Saturday and then Sunday–and began his summer intensive at TDC. Luckily that was enough to heal up his pulled abdominal muscle. He’s had a good time in class. He’s had some fun doing tap, hip hop, Haitian folkloric, Afro Brazilian, musical theater, jazz, modern, contemporary, and, of course, ballet. We still are not 100 sure what his dance program will look like this year, but we are moving forward one step at a time. Today the step was auditioning for TDC. He was accepted once again. We have to figure out what will best help Julian improve his ballet technique this year.

I discovered today that this blog won an award. It was voted one of the best ballet blogs by OnLineSchools.org. I thought this was a joke of some sort, but a few of the blogs on the list are actually written by such well-known ballet experts as Maria Kochetkova of San Franscisco Ballet and Rewi Wortmeyer, who used to be with the Australian Ballet and recently took a job with the Dutch National Ballet. I particularly like being ranked with a father who blogs about his daughter, who dances (although the posts I read had nothing to do with ballet); he calls his blog Real Men Wash Tights. Here’s the whole list.

So, back to the real world here at home…driving…what a concept! We miss the reliability of the subway, if you can believe that. Work. Family. Preparing my daughter to leave for college. Repairs on the house. Doctors appointments.  Getting school reading done. Blah, blah.

I don’t miss the mouse, the heat or carrying groceries, though. And I sleep a lot better in my own bed and with the room cold from fresh air not the air conditioner, which makes noise but blocks out the sounds on the street. I like the moon shining in my window much better than the street light, too.

What to Bring to a Summer Dance Intentsive

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

For those of you going off to a summer dance intensive like American Ballet Theatre, San Francisco Ballet, or any other that lasts a good four weeks or longer, I’ve reposted here the guest blog I wrote for DanceAdvantage.com. Also, here’s a list of items to bring with you (in addition to what they tell you to bring)—in case you are still packing. (Julian and I are on the plane to New York as I write this.)

  1. camera
  2. umbrellas
  3. vitamins, minerals, herbs, and prescriptions (check if you can refill prescriptions)
  4. a refillable water bottle
  5. all types of dance shoes (if your program has more than one style or you can take classes at other studios; this is pertinent in NYC, LA or San Francisco, for instance)
  6. electrolyte packets
  7. sun block
  8. bathing suit (you never know…)
  9. all types of dance wear
  10. several pairs of ballet shoes
  11. backpack
  12. small bag for toting extra stuff
  13. a luggage tote with wheels (for carrying groceries long distances)
  14. several pairs of comfortable walking shoes
  15. nicer clothes for the theater or ballet
  16. a jacket
  17. a raincoat
  18. quarters for the laundry machines
  19. soap and shampoo (for at least the first day or two; most apartments aren’t equipped with these items)
  20. a laundry bag

You’ll want a good map when you get there as well, if you plan on getting around the city at all. It’s helpful to bring a computer, so you can research things like grocery stores, shows to see, classes to take, etc.

We start with a bang. We are off to see Marymount Manhattan and Juilliard on Thursday and Julian will take two classes at Broadway Dance Center. On Friday Julian is taking a master class with Desmond Richardson, Complexions Contemporary Dance’s co-artistic director, at DANY Studios on Friday and then up to Fordham for a tour and information session. Saturday we’ll be at Broadway Dance Center—class with Slam and then up to Steps on Broadway for ballet with Filipov! On Monday, ABT starts. Then I get back down to work.

By the way, despite my suggestion that kids gear up before an intensive, Julian took a week and a half off. He’d danced non-stop and his sprained toe needed to rest. It’s still swollen…and probably will be. But he’s ready to move!
